How are students placed in groups?

Students are initially placed in groups based on the 4th grade teachers’ recommendation and TCAP scores.  We monitor students closely to ensure that they are placed in the group that is best for their particular learning style and move students to another group if warranted.  Many things can affect group placement: classroom performance, behavior, homework completion, and learning style.  All four groups learn the same content, although the delivery may vary.  In science, all four groups learn the same content, but occasionally the pace may vary based on that particular group’s needs.

How can you join the Beta Club?

Beta Club is a school service organization where membership eligibility is based on academic performance and behavior.  To be eligible for an invitation you must have a 92 average or higher in every subject at the end of the first semester.  This includes related arts classes, also.  You will not be eligible if you have had an after school detention or lunch detention in the current school year.  If you’re ineligible this year, you can become eligible in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.

What are demerits?

Demerits are how the 5th grade teachers track student behavior across the grade.  Students who do not follow the 5th grade rules receive a demerit.  At the beginning of school, you will receive a copy of the discipline plan which explains the rules and consequences.  One or two demerits earned in a week is only a warning.  Beyond 2 demerits in a week can result in a loss of recess time, lunch detention, or after school detention.  All demerits are erased at the beginning of the week.

Do we keep an assignment sheet in 5th grade?  How does this work?

On Monday of each week, you will receive a new assignment sheet.  You are responsible for writing down all of your assignments each day.  Even if you have finished a particular assignment, you still must write it down.  You only write “none” if the teacher actually writes “none” on her board.  At the end of the week, your homeroom teacher will take up your assignment sheet and record the  demerits (if any) you earned that week.  You take the sheet home over the weekend and have a parent sign it.
